Water Utilities

For the first time, 5G slices enable water utilities to monitor and control their entire automation technology via a virtual 5G network. Unlike the manufacturing industry with its centralized locations, facilities in the water industry need to be connected over long distances. The slices are regionally limited and optimized for individual use cases in terms of speed, response times, and security. This is crucial for processes such as pressure control, flow measurement, and automated emergencies at water utilities´ sites. The 5G slicing solution addresses one of the biggest challenges facing the water industry – the safe and efficient centralized orchestration of distributed infrastructure, from pumping stations and reservoirs to water towers and treatment plants. Many water utilities have invested considerable effort in monitoring, control, and communication connectivity, which is often time-consuming, costly and additionally requires complex customized solutions. With the new connectivity solution, water utilities can easily connect their entire infrastructure via their own regional 5G slice and integrate additional locations into their network more quickly. The solution is already being tested by a pilot customer in North Rhine-Westphalia.
